She even went so far as to sign him up for an IQ test, sure that he would come out in the 120 to 140 range. It was all about percentiles to her, this would put him at the top. But Johnathan never took the test. He was embarrassed by the way his teacher beamed at him when he was excused from social studies in order to take the exam. Instead of meeting the special proctor in library, he had gone out the door and through the parking lot, weaving through the rows of buses lying like giant yellow centipedes in their white-edged spaces, and just walked. He ended up sitting on a bench about a quarter mile into the greenway just behind the school, shivering in the November cold and wishing he had taken up smoking like his best friend had.
