But He Isn't Crying Anymore

[The Abduction (1867) - Cézanne]

The devil is not just a little boy
anymore
throwing stones, his face red
he accidentally threw his lost angry soul
or maybe he did it because it burned so much
inside of him

Maybe if his daddy hadn’t said
those things to him
My Momma would say “he’s too far gone”
He doesn’t even cry over the Virgin Mary
anymore

But he still hates the Christ:
a boy with a mother and no father—
no seed.
He’s all seed. No wonder
he threw it out
